Intel will present Xeon processor on eight-cores

A slight information leak in the network gave us some heads up on Intel's new invention. During an International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) conference in San Francisco Intel will present their eight-core Xeon processor for high performance server systems. Conference will start on February 8, 2009 to February 12, 2009.

Xeon chips are built on Nehalem micro-architecture and will be produced under 45-nm technology. Each processor holds 2.3 billion transistors and will use QPI motherboard technology to communicate with its neighbours, making about 6.4 billion transactions per second. New processor will require a new type of motherboard supporting Socket LGA1567. We can estimate that soon we'll see a third level of cache-memory up to 24 MB, but no promises yet.

In just over a week from now, we'll be able to present you more information regarding the new Xeon eight-core processor from Intel.

2 Terabyte Hard Drive From Western Digital

Australian stores began to sell 2 terabyte hard drives from Western Digital. For the first time Western Digital is trying to pull off such big capacity hard drives while competing with Seagate, which used to be number one on the market making 1.5 terabyte hard drives.

Western Digital hard drive is included in the Green Products line, because it uses a lot less energy due to speed variation (from 5400 to 7200 RPMs). Unfortunately, the green product idea may have a negative impact on the hard drive production comparing to other similar capacity hard drives. 3.5" WD20EADS also has a 32MB cache and costs $250.

In the near future we can see this product leading the marketplace because Seagate is not planning to launch anything bigger than this, any time soon. As for Samsung, they chose not to compete in terabyte market right away.

Lian Li PC-A05N Black Desktop Case

Lian Li recently announced their new invention, PC-A05N in mini-tower form. The new design has the following dimensions 210 x 381 x 490 mm, it's unique because of its PSU placement. Instead of the standard (back-top) location, Lian Li moved it to the bottom which allows the case to be so low and compact.

As confirmed by the designers, the nontraditional placement of the power block increases air circulation. Stream of air is forced backwards instead of forwards. The air gets sucked in from the back using a 12-cm fan and blown out in-front using 12-cm fan through specially designed holes in front panel.

PSU standard ATX is located in the front lower part of the case, but the plug itself is located at the back as usual. The case has a built-in holders for two 5.25" optical drives, one external and three internal additional 3.5" drives in an anti-vibrational box. Every hard drive is held by an anti-vibrational layers, which lower the humming noise caused by hard drives. This case is designed to support Micro-ATX and ATX motherboards, supports 7 PCI slots, and has an very good ventilation system for them. PC-A05N is designed to fit long video cards. For multimedia input/output, there are two USB 2.0 ports, one IEEE1394 port, and one HD+AC97 sound port.

New PC case is ready for distribution, you may place your order from Lian Li directly. Recommended price by the designers is about $95 (without tax).

Wooden Scrabble Keyboard

We've seen wooden monitors and computer cases, but this time PC fanatics took engineering to another level, by assembling a working wooden keyboard using Scrabble letters. The whole keyword consists of aluminum and scrabble wooden game letters. Designers made few modifications to special buttons like the F1-F12, symbols, etc.

This device uses USB to connect to PC or Mac - doesn't matter. This unique piece got so much positive feedback that the designer decided to make few extra copies for sale.

Gears of War 2 sold over 4 million copies

While chatting with GameDaily BIZ one of the employees announced that Gears Of War 2 already sold over 4 million copies. It only took 2 months to reach this result. The sequel definitely beats original Gears Of War by sales. Gears of War 1 only sold 2 million copies in the same time frame.

If we were to total Gears of War and Gears of War 2, then the sum is around 9 million boxes. That is excluding PC-version since it wasn't as successful as console version. These statistics give us a good prediction of Gears of War 3 which we'll probably see before Xbox 360 dies out.

Xigmatek Thor's Hammer CPU Cooler

Xigmatek company announced their release regarding a new and universal cpu cooler, called Thor's Hammer. For those unfamiliar with mythology of north nations, Thor was a powerful master of lightning and his primary crushing weapon was a magic hammer.

Pay attention how designers of this model again took advantage of H.D.T (Heat-Pipe Direct Touch) technology, which supports all contact on top of four hot chips U-looking heating pipes 8 mm in diameter each. Interesting enough that additional 3 heating pipes are extended from the top surface having 6 mm diameter each.

Radiator is built using many thin aluminum plates of special form, for additional performance there is room for two 120 mm fans.

Lastly, this product supports the following processors: Socket LGA775/1366 (Intel) and Socket 754/939/AM2/AM2+ (AMD), with the following dimensions 120 x 50 x 159 mm, and weighs 500 grams at approximately 57 euros.
